I'm at the diatom phase in my new tank. No surprise there. But wondering about the silicate/diatom relationship I constantly read about.
In freshwater tanks, diatoms are also very common in new tanks, and usually they go away after a few weeks.
However, using tapwater with high silicates doesn't seem to promote growth or making the diatoms stage worse or prolonged.
So why are people concerned about that little silicates that could still be left in the water RO/DI water?
I just can't see how silicates would be the issue, since they also dissapear with using straight tap water.
