So my 40g reef tank is coming up on three months roughly. Cycle was completed and monitored, after wards 25% water change. Then I slowly added one or two new friends a week two clowns, a cleaner shrimp, two turbosnails, fire blenny. I also have three bubble tips and a nice piece of pink cabbage. I know I did not quarantine as I trust my source and everything was bread in captivity I know I’m still taking risks I shouldn’t be. But now at almost the 3 month mark I’ve started getting this brown build up. I use my turkey baster and it was easily blown off one rock but impossible when I tried the middle ones. The only two live rocks that I purchased straight out of a fish tank and were delivered home within 5 to 10 minutes in a bucket of water where the small brown one on the far left and the large tree like looking one on the far right, also the small one the green bubble is on. everything else was dry I added. Used Carib lives and aswell and turbo 900. I did some research and came to a conclusion I should turn my Fluval marine 3.0 to a full blue spectrum for a few days to get diatoms to day off but it’s been out two days and they’re still multiplying the right rock I cleaned off with the baster in the sand that I stirred up is now starting to come back please give me some knowledge my lovely reefer !!

only rodi water and reef salt salinity 1.025-.026
Tidal 110 filter with Chemy-pure elite insert ammonia stable at .02or lower 0 nitrite, 15-20 nitrate everyone is very happy except for my two snails! (Last picture top right).

bestow ur knowledge a pawn me lol

I’ve been home so long I’ve doubled time in my head lool!! The tank was started on nov 28th lool not 3 months it’s been a solid one month but my cycle was done dec 16th snails came with one live rock and have been in tank from beginning without me finding out till a week later .added two clowns once nitrite was gone and ammonia leveled off. And gradually added the rest and here I am today I did water test at LFS they said ur doing awesome for a new guy.( I take pride in my work lol) so my question is are these Dino’s or diatoms and how to treat?

Diatoms, you still are going to go though ugly stage!! Tank veeery young.

So I should treat it or let it run it’s course?
Let it run its course!!! Don’t chase things with chemicals or adjustments at this point. Only going to make things more complex. You are next going to get some algae Just keep watching nitrates and phosphate that not getting crazy high numbers. You are going to get some wild swings for awhile that just have to wait for things to stabilize before you react. Trust me! Your snails are not going to get much to eat until the film algae starts. Don’t be surprised if lose one or 2

Btw my second tank is going though exact same as yours same timing lol

It probably will get worse before getting better! New tank and especially those new rock have a lot of silicates in them which Diatoms eat! It will take a week or even a little longer then all of a sudden they reduce to nothing. Have you seen any green algae yet anywhere? That is truly the ugly stage. I am having some small clumps of green hair algae show up
