I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times before but I'm new. My tank is around 5 weeks old currently probably 4 since adding live rock. About a week ago I started seeing a red dusting on one of the dry base rock I had in the tank. Mostly it's been covering only the base rock and a piece of coral or 2.

Anyway I keep going back and forth on whether this is diatoms or something else such as dino or cyano or something completely different. It's showed up on my power head as well. I haven't really noticed much on the sand but it's hard to tell given I mixed different colors together.

It is mostly a dusting. But it appears as though some have small hair like structures on the dead coral near the powerhead . I've used a turkey baster and some blow away easy enough. The hairlike ones tend to turn into a dust when I baste them. I haven't noticed any being slimy to my fingers.

There is also a few small patches of deep red or maroon colored stuff. I am assuming that is coralline though since I can't baste it, brush it or make it go anywhere by running my finger across it.

Anyway any suggestions? I don't have any cleanup crew yet. I have some micro filter feeders a micro feather duster and maybe 1 or 2 amphipods that hitch hiked but otherwise I've not noticed any other stuff living in the tank yet.

Apparently the photos I took aren't the greatest if better ones are needed I'll try sometime later today when I can .

Going threw "The Ugly's" stage?

Looks like "Dry Rock" in there. Could be leaching out trapped in phosphates.

diatoms and cyano
Which is diatoms which is cyano they are both pretty much identical in color unless you are referring to the small red patches .

Yeah I have dry rock in there. I tried to clean it off by hosing it down and soaking it but I'm sure I didn't get everything. I do have live rock in there too though I'd say it's probably 35-40% live rock. The thing is my tests never said I had any crazy amounts of phosphates. Everything's been within acceptable range. Last few times I checked .

@saltyfilmfolks
Do you have any incite?

Thanks, Freddie

I never really thought it was cyano or dino as much as it was diatoms since there really isn't any bubbles associated with them. Mostly the confusion with me was that some was filimentous. Is it possible I have some hair algae or other algae and diatoms coated them and turned them brown?

Yup, you got the uglies. It goes like this ,diatoms , then hair algae and cynao

Is it possible to have 0 nitrates bit run a skimmer and pull green water and protein solids? I started a skimmer 5 months after start up and have pulled some gnarly green water out. My water is clear for the most part but have always read 0.
4 fish and 20+ cuc. 75 gal.

Yes, just because you have zero nitrates your simmer can still pull out some stuff. Make sure your tank has a lot of flow, this will help with algae.
