diatoms vs dinoflagellates

What is the easiest way to tell diatoms from dinoflagellates ?

Unless they have the hair-like things sticking up, I never can tell in pictures. My advice to OP is, dinos tend not to grow in shaded areas. I’ve never had dinos but those things seem to grow everywhere.

Correcting myself here.... diatoms don’t grow in shaded areas.
