This is my first time with a saltwater tank, it had been cycling for about 3 weeks. The past week I had what I believe to be a sudden outbreak of diatoms. I have not done a water change as of yet. I don't have a skimmer as of yet. It's only a 25 gallon tank so I was told not to rush out and get one. Obvious question here is how do I get rid of the diatoms?
Ph 8.0
Ammonia 0
Nitrite. 0
Nitrate. 10

Keep up with your water changes and try remove some if it gets really messy.

There's nothing you can really do about diatoms in a starter tank, it's part of the cycle.

You just need to give it time it will pass.

You don't need to do anything. The Diatoms will go away by themselves. Do not fret.

Weekly water changes ro/di water if u can get it. like everyone said it will pass just apart of the cycle do not worry to much on it

It is part of a new tank, but is unrelated to the nitrogen cycle.

Diatoms eat silicates that come off new rock and sand. They will eat it the silicates then die off when they run out. When I set up my most current tank, it took about a week and they were gone. (And I was using dry rock and dry sand)

Are you sure it isn't Dinoflagellates

They can last longer than a month in new systems. Its not a big thing with them, they will go away, sometimes will return with the advent of new lighting.

I hope I am not hijacking this thread. Since its about diatoms I figured it is ok.

I do not believe they are Dinoflagellates but I am still new so I do not know. They first appear a little brown dots (a little hard to scrub off, usually have to use my nail) then after a day a brown coat appears and green hair grows from that. After another couple days they are greenish / brown hairs... Those seem to wipe off with ease.

I hope that it is diatoms and not Dinoflagellates...

Lighting: 8W LED from IM. Blue is on 10 hrs, and white is on 8 hrs.
