diatoms

tank is 6 month old and got a bloom a couple weeks ago that turns the sand brown/rust and dusts the glass everyday.
Things I've done so far...

installed a new DI cartridge with silicate remover, changed all water in top off container and did a 30% water change on tank. I am not currently dosing any reef energy or reef roids. I am just feeding my 3 fish Rod's.

the snails take care of the rocks so I don't see any brown rocks just sand. This weekend I am going to pick up some snails to hopefully clean the sand.

from a "prevention" stand point, I did the DI resin to remove silicate but was wondering about phosguard? I currently run GFO and while I know they are two different products I was wondering about the relationship. Can you run them together, only one at a time? etc.

Just looking for something to prevent and remove...

Diatoms ... I wouldn't worry about. Expect them to show up in a new system, bloom a bit while utilizing available silica - and then quietly fade away, all on their own.

You'll see blooms of various algaes, especially through your tank's first year or so. In large part, they're completely normal, natural and expected. (They're also good food for a lot of creatures...) I didn't become concerned with mine until Bryopsis showed up at the party!

what is your definition of quietly fade? It's been about 3 weeks thus far, 3 days with the new DI silicate resin water...30% WC and ATO

My 220 is about 6 months old . I cured everything in brute tubs for 2 months in garage. Everything was pristine in my tank for 5 months until 3 weeks ago . Same thing (at least I hope) brown goldish color algae on rocks. Not stringy so I don't think it's Dino's ! Did 3days of no light slowed it some was about to dose peroxide and decided against it. My levels are all perfect .002 Phos , going to let itself work it out I think.

that is my current plan....ride it out. I did some searching and read mixed reviews on phosgaurd since it's different than GFO but wanted to ask if the alum ox does anything for diatoms

lets just hope the brown goes and the green stays in my wallet...
