This stuff continues growing on my powerheads and overflows. Tank has been running for 2 years and everything else seems to be going well.

Do you keep adding equipment to the tank?

I have not added rock in over a year. I did add a new skimmer about 8 months ago and powerheads a month ago.
Its the powerheads. If you're maintaining 15-25% weekly water changes, it would only take a month to cycle out the diatoms. For every new piece of equipment added, silicates are added. Diatoms eat on silcates and when silica are gone so are diatoms.

Didn't think about that. Thanks.
