hey guys,

So i dont seem to get rid of the diatioms in my 1 year old tank.

I had diatoms before where i had sicate in my tap water and no di-filter.

After addition of the di-filter and changing filter cartridges diatoms went away. Now ive got them again. I suspected the resin to be worn out and changed it aswell as getting w ppm meter to test. So the rodi produces 0 ppm water but the diatoms still wont go away.

Is there any obvious reason im missing? Ik flow can be an issue but in 12 months of reefing i never changed flow and hat a pristine tank for most of the time. Algae is red-brown ish coveing sand and rocks. I thought about it being dinos but i have no dead smails or anything that would stand for that.

I bet It may be dinos, even without dead snails. Buy a cheap microscope to confirm

I had dino's and they looked similar, but mine would cover my corals which I dont see on yours. There are several different strains of them tho. Need a scope to get a real match, but they usually entail long stringy strands with bubbles on the tips and grow fairly fast once the lights come on. What are your phosphate and nitrate levels? Are you running any GFO? I added a UV to my tank and ran Vibrant and mine went away, only if this is what your dealing with. Could be something else but just wanted to share my experience! Hope ya get things worked out soon!

Measurements arnt up to date but its been a liw nutruent system from the biggining. My chaeto keeps dying off cause of liw nutrients. I run carbon. Po was at about 0.05 and nitrate 1-2

From what I have read and my own personal experience once your nutrients bottom out it makes the perfect environment for dino's to attack. I stripped my water with GFO and I had a dino outbreak. This might be your issue. If they end up being Dino's the link provided above by Z will give ya all the info you need on how to battle them! Good luck
