new mixed reef about 7wks in, and I seem to finally be getting diatoms. Parameters are good, including low nitrates and phos.
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the diatoms, or just let it run its course in this new tank?
thx

Let it run its course, it will soon turn into cyano algae, then you'll be at stage 5 of the cycle. After the cyano clears out you'll get some hair algae (stage 6), then you know your cycle is complete.

I came here to post about basically the same thing. Except I believe I’m at the cyano stage. It looks terrible. There’s nothing to do? Should I try to clean it up off the sand or anything?

I wouldn't. You should let it run its course it, with time it will clear up on its own and you will reach stage 6 (green/brown algae stage)

Thanks. I hate hair algae with a passion. Ugh. What do we do once we get to hair algae?

You have a lot of options here. Personally, I'd employ certain snails and fish to deal with it. I'd also create a cheato fuge that has more PAR than the DT. This way the cheato's growth would out-compete the Hair algae's growth. If hair algae grows in the cheato fuge, I'd scrape it out so it doesn't out-compete the cheato for nutrients. I would recommend some snails and fish for the job, but I don't have any information about your build or planned livestock to do so. You could just scrape it off outside of the tank, I've heard that works for some (I wouldn't do that though).

Thank you all for the replies. Below is a picture of my tank - not best quality - the algae is a brown color.
Just to verify, is this diatomes? cyano?
still just observie and maintain parameters, and regular WC's?
thx

You can do a light siphoning and reduce white light intensity for a few days. Add some clean up crew:

3 turbo snail
4 nassarius snail
3 trochus snail
3 nerite snail
3 astrea snail
6 blue leg hermits

i saw on another post this possible remedy:

lights out x5days
dose H2O2 1ml/10gallon for 5nights, and macrobacter7 1ml/10gals x5 days
day 6 turn lights back on with full blue, 10% white, then increase 5% white daily back to my normal baselines

thoughts?
if the recommendation is to just wait it out because its a new tank, no problem; but ifs there is a way to at least halt it, I am interested !
thx

i have some frag corals so not sure if they would be okay with a blackout - montiporas, zoas, chalice

Clean socks.
Suck up what you can.
Blow the rest up into the water column
Wait for a few hours, then new socks.
Repeat daily or so.

Mine took 4 repeats.
