Did I find an egg?

Tonight when I got home there was a grey egg like item on the sand of my tank. It had about 5-6 baby nessarius snails around it. It was about the size of my fingernail and had a softer shell. I was trying to get it out to see what it was any my goby grabbed it and hid it in the rocks. It looked too big to be a fish egg, but has anyone seen something similar in their tank?
