Did I just give myself Dinos?!?!?!

About a year and a half ago I had a massive Dino outbreak and it ended up killing off my entire reef. After a long battle that ultimately was successful (in the sense I beat the dinos but lost everything else), I have been doing well ever since with a very happy and stable reef.

Bottom line - in the last 2 weeks I pulled a turkey baster out of storage to start target feeding an anemone that has come back out from hiding and now magically I have what seems like the first traces of Dinos.

My question, can the spore/seed/whatever live inside a turkey baster for over a year and then start to spread and reintroduce??

I'm going to go bananas if I just reintroduced this on my own after all the precautions I have put in place since having Dinos the last time.

I dont think you can ever rid your tank of something so simple celled. Things like GSA appear in laboratory experiments with tap water and in a clean room.

What probably happened was the spot feeding upset the balance your tank had between corals, coralline etc and nuisance algae.

My suggestion would be to fine tune the spot feeding so that nutrient levels stay stable. Jumps and dives seem to drive dinos.

They can. Some species of Dino's can be airborne, also. It would be almost impossible to keep every strain of dinoflagellates out of your tank. It is more important to make sure you have conditions so that dinoflagellates cannot thrive.

Typically, Dino's become more of a problem in tanks with very low PO4.
