Did i make the right choice with this skimmer??

Hey everyone,

I just moved to CA from NY so trying to find a nice local fish store was a little hard but i found one, But now im trying to decide if they sold me a bad skimmer.

I have a 75 gallon, just set it up with all the rock, sand, salt. He sold me a Hydor Slim Skim which reading the box says its rated for a 65 gallon, i questioned the guy on it and said I dont want to buy something that isnt going to work. He told me its a good skimmer especially if i want it to be internal (its the only place i can put it without having a HOB) and it will do the job good.

Anyone have experience with this skimmer? and did I get suckered into a bad skimmer for my tank? he also said some people buy two of these for their tank. How would I be able to tell if i need to buy another one? and the slits in the top of the skimmer where its supposed to be sucking the water in, they only go above water level about half a cm, is that not enough?

Please help!!!!!

Typically skimmers are overrated by the manufacturer. I wouldn't use that skimmer on anything over 50 gallons. For that size tank, I would look into getting it drilled so you can run a sump. Your options are pretty limited with skimmers that are hang on the back. The Remora Pro would be a good choice though for HOB skimmer.

Agreed you can get away with it lightly stocked and softies for corals but not much more IMO also I think the femora may be a bit under rates as well. If I'm not mistaken they use an mj 1200 for a pump, those are the worsted Skimmer pumps they are loud and very inefficient IMO.

Look in to the aquamaxx hob skimmer, i had one on my old 55 gallon and it was great as far as hob's are concerned. It is rated for up to 75 gallons. I have a 20 gallon tank for my extra frags and such with a sump and i actually use the aquamaxx in the sump just like an in sump skimmer and it works.perfect! When i used it as a hob it had minimal bubbles returning into the display which ive heard can be an issue. Cant speak on the one you have as i dont have any experience with it, but i have heard mixed reviews on it.

If I were in the market for a HB for that size tank, I'd start with Reef Octopus or shops. Of the bunch, I'd be inclined to try the RO BH-90. No first hand experience with it but the reviews I've seen have been good and it's designed like an in-sump skimmer instead of the usual HOB box.

I started with a eshopps in sump skimmer. No luck with it. Would either collect nothing, or foam up and overfill the cup. Went to a Coralife cone. JUNK.. I bought a RO Diablo 160 XS.. Love it.. Would recommend the Reef Octopus line to anyone.

This is just a part of a description for an XYZ skimmer on BRS website, so in case of your skimmer it would be around 50 gallons as BRS recommendation.

I would suggest a reef octopus skimmer. Proven and reasonably priced.

Ya im starting to get the idea I bought a skimmer that wont work so well but i dont think i will be able to return it since its been in my tank for the last day. and as far as HOB's reef octopus and the AquaC remora were my first choices but I really like the idea of an in the tank skimmer cause I dont have room for a sump and dont want the top to be cluttered. does anyone know of any good in the tank skimmers or are they just all crap?

Look at a Tunze 9006. It will fit inside your tank with a magnetic mount, and can be used in your sump, with an included outlet pipe.

They are no longer using the mj1200. A simple trick to quiet that pump down is to super glue the impeller paddle to the magnet. Stops it from rattling. They switched to the Cobalt Mj which has a fixed impeller. They can also be used with a mag 3 or Rio 1400 on the remora pro.
