I did a water change yesterday, and normally the night before I use muriatic acid it new saltwater to drip dkh from 10 to 8. (Instant ocean ), in 40 gallons I use about 10 ml acid.

Last night I drained 40 gallons out of display (180) , and it hit me, my new make up water which has been mixing about 12 hours, never had acid added to it.

I added the acid, and waited about an hour , mixing it up with two power heads, before adding it in.

The water I drained from tank goes right to a drain, so I had no way of recouping it and filling back in tank for new water with acid to mix.

I don’t own a PH monitor, so unsure what my tank or new make up water was .

I know an hour is short, ideally would have been 4 or more , at least 12 I typically do.

What kind of back lash should I expect from this. Figure the water change I do/did, constitutes about a 23 percent water change .

What is the Alk level now? If it is within 1 KH from you normal spot, no issues.

So, you are worried about the pH effect I suppose? That you did not let the CO2 gas off?

Meh, I would not worry too much. Move your return nozzle and any circ pumps upward so the top water is turbulent and gassing off. Make sure your skimmer is running. Extend your light cycle for another hour. Nobody is going to suffer; just giving you some ideas to help you feel better that you are "doing something" but don't sweat this.

Correct. DKH should be the same, new water VS old. Was/is more worried about co2, low ph.

Figure the total new body of water say is 5 parts. (20 percent, so 1 part new, 4 parts existing) say my water is normally 8. 8 times 4 old parts, 32. That new water part , 1/5 of whole, day went to down to 7 flat. 32 and 7, divided out by 5, 7.8 average ph for whole tank.

I’m hoping it was higher than 7.0 in trash can, it’s not like I did it and immediately used it, at least an hour so hopefully it started to creep up and hover around 7.2 or so.

Would a drop to 7.8 from 8 instantly for enough to shock?
