I have a 30g tank with a 5g hob refugium. 34 lbs of LR and a 2 in SB. the tank has been running for 24 days and i have been testing the water every other day. I have yet to see any spikes in ammonia. Is it possible that i have missed the cycle? Also i havent had a diatom bloom yet.

Did you add any thing to start the cycle?Try testing nitrates/nitrites

Or add some ammonia and see how long it takes for levels to drop.

I didnt add anything. I was told that the LR would put it into a cycle. Ammonia:0. Nitrite:0. Nitrate:10 ppm

first of all you do have to add some organics to start the cycle.

But even with that it is entirely possible to "cycle" an aquarium with algae with no ammonia spike.

What happens is the algae actually prefers ammonia and will consume it over nitrates. So at first you can get a nitrate spike but no ammonia spike.

Very common among "planted" setups.

With the live rock you most likely won't see any cycle honestly... Every time I swap tanks I use all new sand and water but my old rock and move everything the same day and never saw any cycles or had any live stock losses... That includes Sps the most delicate...;)
