Dietary Guide for Caribbean Blue Chromis

Hi All!

I have a few chromis in QT and have taken pictures of the process from day one. I am excited and look forward to moving the fish to the DT. Everyone is alive, survived their first power outage, and seem healthy. I have noticed over the weeks since I introduced the fish that they have actually lost a bit of their color brightness. Their behavior seems normal, they have grown, and I have kept up with treatments and water changes religiously. The quarantine tank is a standard 10 g aqua from petsmart, and I am dosing Prazi 1 week, Chloroquine P. 2 weeks and monitoring 1 week after GFO&Carbon filtering. Also, feeding Mysis daily.

Is this normal? is this my treatments? Is my diet adequate? should I add any dietary supplements? am I missing anything?

Mysis is good. It you may want to slowly offer flakes and 1mm pellets to give a balance nutritio. For flakes i use firmula one and for pellets I use spectrum. Good luck!

May be some stress from QT. A wider variety of foods should help. I use Formula 1&2. Rotate it with frozen mysis for variety. Vitamins will also help, I use Selcon myself with every feeding.

The color dullness is most likely related to the tank size and medicine.

Once they get to the dt their color will likely improve.

Adding variety to their diet can help. Any small meaty foods will do.

Chromis also thrive with small frequent meals throughout the day.

UPDATE!

Since this update I have been pretty aggressive on water quality and monitoring it's parameters. I did a 3 gal water change on a 10 gal tank with HOB filter.

Yesterday morning I noticed one fish has popeye. It's only in one eye and clear. Though I have noticed it behind the eye I dont believe anything too sinister. I did another WC and kept the led lights off all day. I did illuminate the tank with ambient lighting to be softer of that one one and not strain anything. I also picket up some chemipure and Kanaplex. I dropped the Chemipure in the hob last night and have seen an immediate result in that one eye. The bubble has receded greatly and still have not started any treatment.

I'm somewhat playing this by ear, but I have never heard of this kind of response and so soon. What am I doing right? Can anyone interpret this as water quality or injury?

Additionally, their color has returned and bright as ever since that chemipure. It literally happened overnight.

The popeye is from an infection on an injury and is exacerbated by water quality. Cleaning up the water helps the fish's immune system fightthe infection.

I placed my meters in the water last night to monitor. I will remove the gfo, replace filter, and dose kanaplex tonight in light of that. @eatbreakfast. Thx

If the eye is getting better, I wouldn't dose the medicine. Just maintain the water quality.

Popeye update! @eatbreakfast

popeye has almost completely receded and this is the first morning normal color of the eye and body has returned. Great progress! Sickly has returned to active play with the other two and all seem healthy and well adjusted. General antiseptic was continued in QT.

Side Note:
I believe my my digital PH meter is off .2. It read 8.52 and I took Randy's recommendation and aired the tank. Didn't work. Added 9ml of CO2 very slowly and it lowered ph to 8.49. I have also made a couple manual tests with Red Sea test kit and taken a sample to two stores. 3/4 have read my PH is closer to 8.1 than 8.3 or 8.5 which I have asked all associates who took my water tests. All of Red sea test kit, API strips, and API chemical tests have returned the same results. I'm just gonna offset my readings .2 on meter and leave it. Unusual! When the tests were completed meter read 8.3.
