Could someone please explain the difference between granular ferric oxide and products like Phos-zorb? I'm having trouble even finding online what Phos-zorb contains. I see that some experienced reefers run GFO and/or carbon, but I'm trying to understand the difference between those and other biomedia.

Thanks!

If you're after info about that particular product, calling the company or one of their dealers on the phone might be the fastest way if you are having no luck online.

In general, iron-based and aluminum-based chemical media are the main two anti-phosphate products you will find available. (Bio media is different.) GFO has a slightly depressive effect on alkalinity and is slower acting. Aluminum works so fast that it must be applied judiciously in dirty tanks.

I've used both with enough success that I have no preference, but following product instructions is important. Depending on the brand/style of GFO the aluminum based products may be a lot easier to handle since they need minimal to no pre-rinsing.

Of course limiting bioload and nutrient inputs in the first place is the best solution. ;)
