Hi guys

I appear to have 2 distinct different colonies of coralline algae growing
The usual purple, and a rich dark red variety (see below). I've got several spots if the dark red, and it appears to be the same texture as the purple

Any ideas why or any other interesting facts about coralline algae you can tell me ?

From my understanding, while coralline is commonly purple it can come in a few different colors. Red, pink, green, blue.. etc. i have a mix in my tank as well.

Touch the red thingy with your finger - if it's slippery it's NOT coraline algae although it may appear like it (..but is something like Peyssonnelia algae).

You may have nailed it. Definately not slimy, is same texture as the purple stuff and matches description of Peyssonnelia algae
I wouldn't panic though - that algae is generally harmless (unless it grows out of proportion) and could be quite pleasing/aesthetic.

I had it growing on rocks in patches here and there for years and it never caused problems.
