Hi all, I’ve been looking for something a bit different for my collection of soft corals and found this below

It’s quite interesting as it’s of a matting type similar to some species of sarcothelia, whats throwing me back it’s that it branches like cespitularia and to confuse me further it pulses every now and den like silver branch Xenia but obviously as it branches can’t be Xenia.
Any thoughts?

Looks like a cespitularia.

Pretty sure that's some form of Klyxum (if that's still a classification, they change them a lot). It's a fast grower too, very attractive. I have some in my tank and under a 15K light it's almost red.

P.s. It doesn't grow tall and is like ground cover.

thank you, going to look into it see find it

Here is an accurate pictures of klyxum from Dr alderslade’s book. There are a few varieties. The kind you have will grow low but it will still make some branches that grow a bit taller. I had some and the growth pattern could very quite a bit but it never got long branches like a sinulara. If you look closely at the polyps on yours when they are extended they should have a similar shape. Granted it’s just a guess and I could be totally wrong. Some coral morphology is greatly influenced by captivity and also there are always new varieties being found. Most ID is now done by DNA because some are nearly impossible to differentiate.

Thank you, it does looks similar to the first pic with the exception that the polyps are more of a branching type.

spot on that’s exactly the same coral thanks

Glad I could help. Wish our LFS had soft corals. They like to stick to acros, lps and zoas. I can't blame them, that is probably what sells. Only "leathers" I see are the green neptheas that have been around forever.

I feel you, they been quite hard to source in the UK also, if you want anything different you really need to shop around

This picture is of a coral I had in the 90s that I thought might be cladiella. Looked just encrusting, but if you waved the polyps closed it was clearly a very low white leather coral, of some kind. Been looking for it again.
