Hey all, so a few weeks back before I even added my fish from a fallow period and no new corals I had a pristine 125g aquarium w/ a 40g sump and a skimmer rated for 220g plus cheato on reverse light cycle, granted I had some cyano but I cured that with chemiclean. I tried 4 day blackout but it came back with a vengeance. Well now I have a bad case of dinos and it's on everything. It's even hurting my acros by trying to grow on the tips. My lps won't open as much either. My params are as follows: cal: 440, alk: 8.98 dkh, mag:1400, potassium: 390, nitrates: 10ppm. I run a zeo system plus I does acropower, but I've reduced its dose thinking it might be culprit. I'm turkey basting my corals several times daily to get what I can of this algae off and it comes back immediately, I'm assuming the corals catch this stuff but dinos opportunistically try to grow on the coral that way. Anyway I'm trying to reduce nutrients, but I've also heard you shouldn't do wc with dino outbreaks. Any help would be great! Pic is after turkey basting.

Check out the first post here: Dinoflagellates – Are You Tired Of Battling Altogether?

Dig into the info and links on the first post before you try diving into the whole thread. (Its big.)

Especially the parts on causes and ID – make sure you really have dino's and make sure you stop doing anything you might see listed there to encourage them.

ID what specific types of dino by microscope if possible. (Check out the microscope link if you don't have one.)

There are non-microscope tests there that you can do as well.

What are your PO4 levels?
Are you using GFO or any other phosphate remover(s)?
Was the tank started with live rock or dead rock? How long ago? When did the tank get its first corals?

I currently don't have a test for po4. I started a new system with rock from an old one and has been up for a year before this happened.

No gfo or phosphate removers. Just zeobak, zeofood, sponge power, and zeolites.

I currently don't have a test for po4.

It's going to be hard to say a lot without this info....or some microscope pics or other tests to go by.

If you're running all that Zeo stuff (I don't know what some of that stuff is, can you ID it?), isn't your tank supposed to be "ultra low nutrient"?

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
