Hi folks,

I think I have dinos in my 10g and recently got a microscope and was hoping someone knowledgable could ID this so I can plot my course of action:

I'm no scientist but I just grabbed a puppet full of the stringy stuff and dumped it on a slide. Happy to be told I did it wrong. Thanks

I’m not an expert when it comes to marine microbes, but in bacteria at least, it’s almost impossible to pin point the exact species from a microscopic image alone. Usually you will need to run either an biochemical assay or genetic analysis.

As for possible cure. Dinoflagellates are by far a challenge for me cuz our coral’s zooxanthellae are are dinoflagellates so many species can flourish in a nice reef environment too.

What works really well for me with all algae is just turning off the lights for at around 5 days and adding in herbivores. So far I think urchins are the best.

Good luck!
