This photo is taken at 190x. That is a piece of sand they are all on. These dinos are in the sand only. They are affected by black outs and UV, but this does not resolve the problem - they can be seen again within hours of lighting the tank after a 3-day black out. The tank has extremely low nutrients. Thinking to try dosing some nutrients, also have silicate to experiment with if needed. Also considering removing the sand bed. The tank is a few years old.

I'm not 100% sure they are dinos because they don't move, and they are much smaller than any dinos I've put under the scope before. Any ideas?

Hi myka, in if you can take a brighter and closer photo that would be great. It sounds like you have prorocentrum Dino’s

You can use this to help ID Them, https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/dinoflagellate-identification-guide.671466/

Also the way they swim is a good indicator of which one you have

Hi Bob, thanks for your message. I have used that dino ID, and they all look the same to me! I don't think it is Prorocentrum though because they are too small, and they don't go into the water column easily. I cannot get a closer photo, I only have 250x USB microscope.
