Hi All,

I thought that I had cyano before but you guys helped me confirm that it was a form of dinos. It's gotten progressively worse, but here is what I've done so far over the past month:

  1. Raised phosphates to a daily amount of at least 0.03
  2. Raised nitrates to be around 3-5 consistently
  3. Changing of filter socks as frequently as possible
  4. Manual removal daily (to the extent that is possible without removing too much sand)
  5. Confirmed RODI water was in check
What other possible steps should I be taking for remediation? It's getting pretty thick and difficult to take off now, especially on the corals.

When should I consider a blackout? UV isn't in the cards due to it being cost prohibitive. Also, this is a small, 4.8g setup for what it's worth. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

I would raise phos to 0.1 and nitrates to 10, test daily and dose accordingly.
What dinos are we talking about?
Consider dosing Silicate to get some diatoms growing, competition for dinos.
Dose copepods,phyto, bacterial supplement.
All aids the competition of the dinos.
Patience is the key. Won't get better over night.

Good recs! So I've dosed Microbacter7 for a few weeks and no luck.

Could you've recommend some product names or links for the other items that you suggested?

+1 raise those nutrients higher and give yourself a buffer. Live phyto and silicate dosing (waterglass) worked best for me. These are sand dwelling?

Also when dino start to recede I was getting a huge release in phophates and then was having trouble keeping them from taking off. I think they sequester it somehow.

Copepods I would buy from my Lfs or find an online vendor same for the life phytoplankton( I make my own cultures).
Silicates you can do what was mentioned(waterglass), I couldn't coz it's not available in Australia so I bought Sodium silicate and made my own solution.

Don't overdose silicate, I ended up with a diatom bloom and lost 2 corals coz I overdosed. But that's when my dinos disappeared too.

Patience is the key. Keep dosing the microbakter. Suck as much of the dinos out as you can( I used a 5 micron filtersock). Eventually other forms of algae will compete with the dinos and then outcompete them. Then you can deal with the other forms of algae.
