hello, I had Dino in my reefer 170 sold it. Now I got a little 15g cube set up with all new stuff. Dino is back! Never had this issue in my larger tanks ... I’m starting to wonder if it’s the RODI unit. Even though it’s 0tds and all new filters! Not sure how I keep getting this... any help on how to get rid of this without starting over AGAIN

What have the nutrients been like in both tanks ?

Were they both dry rock start ups.

Most of what we see is phosphate limited tanks getting dinos.

Did you get a microscope ID of your dinos?

Following.

I have a 110 gallon with a 5 year fight against dinos.
I lost that fight.

Im about to set up a brand new bare bottom 180 gallon with all new everything.
I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE DINOS AGAIN!

Fiji mud , Garf grunge. Good ph. Avoid bottom out nutrients. DR tims one and only.

Does fiji mud still exist?

True live rock is just about impossible to find so many have to start with dry rock.

How do you get true biodiversity in a tank nowadays?

No high also. It just don’t make sense. Don’t know why it’s happening. My 2 larger tanks never an issue

They still sell florida live rock. Like salty stated above; garf is still in business.

Garf.org they sell both grunge and bag o bugs, i think 1 or 2 other items.

Uh oh. Discontinued?

Sally jo at Garf. Get grunge. And some corals !

All the true love rock is from Florida unless you have friends importing corals. There’s a few places stil down there.

Removing dinos is for all practical purposes impossible.

You could scrub your rocks, vac the sand, and do a huge wc. If even a handful are left within a few days they will multiply right back to where they were before the work if the conditions that caused the bloom still exist in the tank. (A uv will help with non sandbed residing species, will not help with those that do not enter the water column at night.)

You need to skew the tank to a competitor, be it diatoms, caulerpa, etc.

They are not like other algae, no need to clean up once a competitor has the edge they will start to disappear rapidly eventually leaving no trace they were there. Mine took 2 days once they started to retreat to nothing. Not even waste product like dead strands, i mean no trace.

What do you mean?

In nutrient deficient scenarios dinoflagellates are able use several biological process that allow them to outcompete other forms of algae. They can eat other microorganisms, are able to reproduce with less available nutrients. On the flip side diatoms when nutrients(including silica) are ample diatoms are able to reproduce at speeds that will outcompete dinos for space. Caulerpa and other macro algae use alleopathy to deter other organisms from growing as long as they have enough nutrients to grow :)

So. Any suggestions on how to remove ?
If the tank is not nutrient deficient, and the ID is confirmed , dino x, fluconazole , increasingl ph to 8.5 for a week or so and peroxide dosing have both been shown to effective.
But the addition of micro and macro organisms is highly reccomded.

How do I get the macro and micro organisms?

I live on the water, i used a mixture of real ocean rock and garf bag o bugs. I also added sodium silicate, sodium nitrate and kh2po4. It was a little bit more indepth my process of adding the ocean rock. But thst was the gist of my dino cure. Took awhile, they are not an over night fix.

And how to raise the PH? Kalk ?

Ph easiest way to try is run a airline hose from your skimmer to the outside. If this doesnt do it next safest is to run that same line to co2 removal media reactor. This can get pricy over time

Another great option is Indo-Pacific Sea Farms. A LOT of great options including macro algaes and wonder-mud and sand activator with a lot of good organisms.

I have added both Garf Grunge and ipsf materials and seeing great control and stability in my tank now.
