Hi guys, this is my first post on this forum but i’ve been an active member on another forum for many years.

I have a 50 gallon reef running at the moment for about 7 months now. It is mostly SPS with some LPS and Zoas mixed in. I’ve been battling a Dino problem for the past couple months now with my luck only being with black outs and h2o2 (I’ve tried dinox and UV with little help). It’s not a bad infestation but the few strings/mats of it I get seem to clump on top of my zoanthids closing them up as well as the tips of my birdsnest and some montis and has outright killed my encrusting porites, surprisingly enough my acros seem to be uneffected and thriving as long as I keep my parameters stable. I’m not really sure what my next step is with the Dino’s.

Additionally, and why I am making this thread, is about the GFO I’m using in the sump in a small reactor. After replacing GFO a week ago and having some of it spill out of the reactor and into the floor of the sump I have had an outbreak of an orange dusting that covers most artificial surfaces in the sump and some in the display. It literally looks like GFO dust sticking to everything but I feel like I’ve seen this sort of thing before in one other place: freshwater streams/creeks containing iron eating bacteria. I’m wondering is that what this orange dust is? Does GFO contain iron and can it leach out? Can this GFO/iron support Dino’s?

Sorry for such a long first post, thanks for any help!

Joe

Granular Ferric(from Latin Ferrum=Iron)Oxide.

Thank you, MabuyaQ. Is this iron of concern to us? I know heavy metals can cause problems with inverts.
