Dinoflagellates?

That is red cyano
I second that. A real PITA. Lower nutrients, don't dose nitrates (that was my mistake), and increase flow if possible. I siphon all I can when I water change, even if that means slowly depleting my sand bed. I think I might be getting the upper hand on it but it has taken weeks.

Is this the kind of bacteria that can actually benefit from the ethanol I'm dosing?

As I think its photosynthetic bacteria, does it help to black the tank at all, or is that for Dino's?

In only three days, reduced feeding and increased flow has mad a dramatic difference. I've kept the windows open, which drives my pH up a little, and I'm sure that's helped. It's going in the right direction anyway.
