Hi all,

I've gone through the ugly phase, but now there's a new culprit in town. Did a 2 month dark cycle and thought I had the uglies beaten...

Turned on the lights and BAM, two weeks later this cr*p.

What beith it? Doesn't look like the diatoms I had originally. Has small air bubbles in it, and is like a furry mat on my rocks and sand. Brown/ purple in colour.
Funny thing is my astrea snail is eating it and hasn't died.

(Ps: sorry for the blueish photos- took me some time to get my light set up properly a don't want to mess it up accidentally)

Yep - Chrysophytes which love the dark. Now you will have to remove rock and place in a container of tank water and scrub with a firm toothbrush or automotive detail brush and return rock to tank.
Thereafter add snails to maintain control such as :
Astrea
cerith
nerite
ninja star
Trochus
chiton

redish in color? more looks syano to me

Looks like Cyano turkey baste it. I turkey baste mine daily. If cyano gets on your coral it can kill it and it’s even toxic for humans to consume.

Sorry to tag along but Ive actually had this for going on a month now. My problem is its taking up Nitrates and Phosphates so Im reading zero. Ive been feeding a little heavier and added Amino acids since it started because my corals are looking peekid. Dont want them to slow down.

I recommend diamond goby he will eat all the Cyano out of the sand bed and keep your bed pretty but may dump sand on your coral. I never do water changes and it keeps nitrates up so I have less Cyano. Could add more fish, or leave it more dirty and that will produce nitrate.

I have used chemiclean to remove Cyano and it worked for two weeks then got it back. I mainly just turkey basted it now. My diamond goby keeps my sand bed sharp.

Yeah ive shut off the skimmer and algea scrubber a week ago. Ive been running a simple hang in tank filter with floss to try to help remove it mechanically. Ive also started feeding a bit heavier, added 10 hermit crabs (replacing "missing" ones) and a pair of Harlequin shrimp to some day get control of my new starfish explosion.

Could add wave makers to add flow to the rocks so it can't grow. I have done that but it ticked corals off so depends what coral you have and what not as well.

Im afraid Chemiclean will slow my growth.

Reducing light as well can help with Cyano. I do not know anything that eats it other than my diamond goby.
