I think the evidence is pretty good that competition of some organism (maybe algae, maybe cyano, maybe something else) is a primary factor is keeping dino's from becoming a pest.

That competition might be for space only, or for one or more trace elements that organisms need.

Driving nutrients too low seems to encourage dinos, most likely be reducing that competition. By this explanation, adding the needed trace elements might also encourage them.
Randy,
I obviously did the wrong thing (back in 2015) by making so many water changes and driving other things down.

Do you think Dino's are always present in a reef or do you believe that they have to be introduced when adding new corals or other livestock?

Thanks, Freddie

I'm not sure how prevalent dinos are in a setting where they are not a problem.

In 20 years I never once had something that I identified as dinos (or even looked remotely like them), but my nutrients were never especially low.

Randy,

I hope that my reef never gets them again and I've only had to deal with dino's that one time, but it was the pits :(
During that time period I was probably making too many water changes and driving the nutrients too low.

What else can you say than... "Live and Learn" :)

Thanks to "all" that took the time to respond to this thread and it means a lot.
