Hey everyone how’s it going? My tank is new, only been up and running since Labor Day and yesterday I came home from work and most of my dry rock and some of the sand was brown with bubbles. I am assuming this is dinos right? The tank is a 20 long and the only thing in it as far as livestock goes is a tiny clown fish, 3 blue leg hermits, 8 nassarius snails, 3 cerith snails, 3 nerite snails, and 4 trochus snails. Any opinions/help will be appreciated

Hey Bub -

Ya, so if stringy a bit or bubbly, then likely yes Dino's. Usually comes from low nutrient systems, but could also be due to flow. How's your flow where the rocks and sand are more heavily covered in it?

Yeah flow definitely isn’t the issue. The tank is just about a cyclone, lol. The tank is a 20 long and I have an icecap gyre 1k for flow plus the hob filter and skimmer and my scaling is a bunch of glued together dry rocks that I broke up into pieces. I’ll post a pic right after replying to you. As far as nutrients go I haven’t tested phosphates yet since the tank is only a few months old and I don’t have any corals yet but nitrates are around 10ppm.

Looks more like diatoms.

I’m not exactly sure what it is but I have noticed it has died down a little bit since the other day so maybe it is diatoms? It is a new tank started with dry rock. Does that make a difference in what it may be?

Dry rock and New sand are candidates to produce diatoms along with excess nutrients

Not sure if it’ll play but here is a quick video of the flow at the surface which is really the only place you can see it other than when I sprinkle a little food in it
