Hi all,

I have a chalice I received that even after removing most of the plug off, has some brown hair algae on it.

looking to do a peroxide dip but wondering what strength?

im leaning towards a 4:1 tank water to h202 solution and dip the entire frag.
Or alternatively, spot treat it with 4:1 and let it soak for a few minutes.

Thoughts?

thanks!

nah spot treat it dab a qtip in h202 than hold it on the area pull the algae off first careful chalice don't like h202

I would recommend not getting the stuff in the brown bottle . I would get food grade 35% and water it down when you need it to 1% the stuff in the brown bottle has stabilizers in it and the oxygen molecule won t split off . You can get it at any hydroponics store for about 10 to 12 dollars a half gallon which is more expensive but it's way more concentrated but make sure you use safety glasses and gloves it gas a ph of about 3.5

What's the difference between food grade and the brown bottle? Just asking because my brown bottle says it's for treating cuts and scraps in humans. If its' used on open wounds in humans, I think its' safe for a coral dip.

I'd spot treat chalice. They can be so finicky imo.

That sounds interesting, I dont understand why the ph makes it dangerous or is that not why you say beware? I've seen people mention ph of products like the #? I just don't know, wondering if you could enlighten me :)

yeah, Roger that

yeah, the food grade stuff is what I get but you can overdo it, I killed my tank but I was really stupid….just be careful, it does burn…
second that, chalices and shrimp aren’t fond of peroxide
the food grade stuff is over 20% …I wanna say it’s 35% …eitherway, not for mouth wash …..

No dude. You'll burn up the delicate tissue of the chalice that's use to delicate deep waters.

Any type of hair algae grows roots into the pores as anchors. You may think you are removing it by burning it off with acidic oxidizing h2o2....but it will return from its roots.

Only way to get rid if it is to starve it out.... where the roots die off too.

The roots deeper than where any toothbrush can scrub.

You're doing more harm than good...but do what you want to do.

The PH makes it dangerous because it’s acidic, solutions/chemicals that are either too acidic or too basic can cause chemical burns. Add to that the fact that H2O2 can denature and destroy living cells (why even 3% solution turns wounds/tissue white), and you’ve got a fairly dangerous chemical.

Ahhhhh ok I know what you mean about overdoing contact time with 3% on wonds makes the skin white, I wondered why I saw a post the other day about a guy getting a D.I resin bead in his eye and randy said becareful because of the p.h thats when I was wondering, then I saw this so im glad I asked, thank you!

It's deffinitly not for cuts or mouth wash. I used it in school in my alot I have my. BA in botany. It's amazing in hydroponics and adding to your soil cause of the oxygen. I've never added it straight to a tank though (nor do I think I would try it) but your deffiniatly right. It can be pretty dangerous I us I always you gloves and goggles . It's ph is around 3.5 . I believe that stomach acid is around 1.5 to 3 but I'm no Dr.

Can confirm you will nuke your chalices with peroxide

I spot treated a bunch of algae this past weekend - then realized I had been overdoing it and was injecting 8-10 coral feeder tubes worth of it into my tank - DOH

Lost a shrimp, hurt one of my candy canes (killed a head), and killed a chalice.
