Dipping deepwater acros

Ive killed some nice smooth skinned from dipping. My advice is to buy from a trusted source so u dont have to dip. QT would be great. Its not hard to see pests on em anyway because there is really nowhere to hide on smooth skinned acros

the risk is greater if it has pests. cut the plug or rock its on. get a magnifying glass and search for any dead spots or bite marks. small dead spots can have a small egg clusters on them as well. and dip for a couple of minutes. turakis get burned very quickly by the dip. after dipping place them in a low flow area in your tank.

i would still dip and observe for eggs because if I get pests its ultimately my responsibility that my tank gets infected. a few minute dip wont make red bugs or aefw fall off so i use a turkey baster and blow on it a few times. red bugs may hide in corallites so you could use bayer insecticide to kill them instantly without stressing your coral out as much as the other regular dips out there but they have no effect on aefw whatsoever. Eggs is what you have to look for

after rereading my post I wanted to clarify that its bayer insecticide that has no effect on aefw. only on hard shelled organisms like pods, red bugs, and crabs, they seem to die instantly.

Really? I was told that they do. What is your recommendation since I've been lucky enough not to have or see them so far?

when i first used bayer to treat my corals i was basting them and seeing them fly off. I was thinking wow, bayer really works! hahahaha. I found a flatworm on my plug but forgot about it and left it in the dip for over two hours. I saw the worm still on the plug and when i blew him off it was still crawling around on the bottom. water was very milky too.
I recommend industrial strength coral rx or any other dip just not bayer for flatworms. it has mono sodium glutamate that kills hard shelled organisms only.

I recommend to all our customers that they dip all corals, even corals from us. It's just a good habit to get into, the minute you let your guard down and forget to dip that frag you got at a swap is when pests get in your system.
Regarding deep water acropora, most can tolerate a 3-5 minute dip and a gentle swish or quick hit with a turkey baster.
Echinatas and "dragon" type deep water species are the most delicate.
We dip Turaki, suharsoni, Lokani, and granulosa just like any other species. But we use separate dips of revive, prazipro, and levamisole. We also do random dips (kinda like a random drug test!) on our stock, just to ensure nothing is getting through.

Revive is more gentle than coral RX, in my opinion.
Curious as to why you believe Bayer only works on red bugs and not AEFW. I have only read empirical evidence from fellow reefers but all (that i have read) seem to think it is effective. I have not seen any scientific research at all on this topic. I routinely use Bayer as a dip on all new frags but at a high concentration, relatively , and I use this on all acros, red dragon, mr. Pacman, echinatas.

i read the posts on bayer killing aefw too. its beyond me how it worked for them and not me. I used the bayer blue bottle. maybe a different type of bayer? idk

I have use Bayer to kill AEFW. From what I've seen there are 3 common versions: w/ Germ Killer; Regular and Concentrate. I used the concentrate version @ 2.5ml per cup of tank water and watched as the AEFW fell right off the corals.
I have dipped all types of corals including smooth-skinned deepwaters as i kept killing the turaki's i would get in my other dips.

I dont know which one i used. A guy I know gave me a blue bottle w/o a label and told me he came up with a new aefw dip formula that doesnt stress out corals. Several weeks later, i went to my friends work and saw the same blue bottle with the label bayer insecticide. My friend bought it for his reef tank in his office. I was pretty ****** because I was unknowingly handling poison. I confronted him about it and he just laughed. true story.
