Dipping rock with coral in peroxide.

Title said it all. Can I dip a rock with coral on it to kill algae while keeping the coral safe?

What concentration of peroxide and what kind of corals? I would probably stay away from dipping any soft or lps.

In my experience, I’ve started seeing signs of stress on my Duncan, toadstool and frogspawn at about 30mg/L almost instantly. There was damage on sps mucus at 50mg/L after longer exposure, one stylo didn’t recover. At higher doses, and I’ve only tried this on a small birdsnest frag, there was pretty serious damage.

I haven’t tried repeating results, so take this with a big grain of salt and the goal was to test something related to ich not algae. Perhaps a very short dip would be fine, not sure how long it takes to kill off all algae spores/cells.

I wouldn’t try it. Unless you want to kill the corals too.

Peroxide in any concentration to kill other things will also harm coral.

I have dipped zoa's before, to kill of sim algae on a few frags that were not doing well. A month later, no algae, happy Zoe's, plenty of growth.

Put them in a small dish with tank water, get them to close, then add peroxide cap by cap until you start to see bubbles. Stir. I let them soak for about 10 min, rinse in clean tank water, then put them back in the tank under low light.

Hmm this is interesting. I would be doing the same as this but it is a rock with mushroom softies.

ive done it, sometimes it kills it sometimes it dosnt. It does kill the algae. Best bet is to spot treat the rocks, take it out spray it with a spray bottle with h202. Let it sit for a few min, get a bucket of fresh salt water and swirl it around for about a bit. Then get new SW and let it sit in a bucket WITH FLOW for 5 or 10 min, then put it back in your tank. This is the best way I have found to do it. You may still lose a coral on the rock but to me its the lowest risk method. Also make sure not to spay the sps directly, use a piece of paper or plastic or something to shield the coral as best as possible.

I'll also add the surgical option, never contacting peroxide to non targets.
With this rare option easier for nano reefs to run vs large tanks, we can rid the entire tank of detritus all at once as well...a true cleaning from the bottom up + peroxide kill and rasp the target. Mighty fast

Hmm this is interesting. I would be doing the same as this but it is a rock with mushroom softies.

I had a rock with mushrooms that was given to me last year. I didn't dip the entire rock, but rather just took a toothbrush with straight 3% peroxide and scrubbed the rock. Worked well and didn't get any on the mushrooms.

But, i recently dipped several palys and a devils hand leather in a mix of peroxide/tank water AFTER a CoralRx dip bath. They did great...put into DT and the owner up within a day and have been quite happy since.

But...I would like to add...don't use too high of a concentration or ratio of peroxide to water. I also had a huge dino outbreak in a coral quarantine tank recently. I was adding 1mL per 10 gal of peroxide and not seeing any changes to the situation. My LFS said it takes more than 1mL per gallon and said just "dump some in" the tank. Well, I did that and melted everything in there overnight! So, just keep the peroxide well diluted if dipping...or only apply directly do the rock!
