Hey!

Im struggling to keep a clean sand bed, no matter what i do it gets dirty again within 12 hours. Tank is around 2 years old now and ive not had the issue as bad as this before.
Ive tried siphoning but the problem still doesnt clear. The sand seems to go a brownish colour on the top layer. I use rodi water and its saying tds is 1.

Tank is 400L, 4ft and has 2x hyrdra 26hd running on it.

Have a GFO reactor running and a reef octo skimmer.

Any ideas what i could try?

cheers
Kial

A couple of diamond goby's and a tiger sand conch keep mine pristine.

Siphon out a small amount of sand than replace with new sand, repeat until all of your old sand is replaced with new sand.
NOTE: Do this very slowly over a course of a month or 2.
Also do you should have sand shifting animals, snails, gobys, shrimp etc..

+1 on Tiger Conch and Goby.

There like a roomba for your house. ;) I use to stir my sand and even bought a gravel vac and used it for awhile. Since adding the goby's and conch I haven't touched my sand since. Also have nassarious snails, Mexican turbos, emerald crabs and trochus snails. They call them CLEAN UP crews for a reason.

Sounds like cyano to me. Is it mostly on the front panes facing light?
If so you can buy various treatments and decrease indirect light
I have had a recurring cyano problem after move to a new tank. Despite what everyone claims as underlying causes my nitrates snd phosphates are very low. My LFS owner has had similar issues with tanks receiving direct sunlight too

Agree with the goby, my sand looks awesome. However do you have corals on your sand bed? If so I wouldn’t recommend a goby as they will move/bury/bother most corals

I would check for Dino’s as well. You are running a GFO reactor, but what is your PO4 testing at?

NO3 levels and a picture would also be greatly helpful...

I used to have a goby and he would destroy any corals on the sand bed. I do have some nassarius snails, trochus, and stromb. Also sea cucumber which cleans it but only in patches and is SLOW.
I dont believe its cyano as I've had this before also dont think its dyno.

Try siphoning off the taop layer of sand, rinse a few times in tap water, drain, then pour in a bottle of H2O2 and let it set a day or so. rinse again once or twice and add it back to your system.
