Disappearance of diamond goby???

Hi all. I am freaking out. My diamond goby suddenly disappeared. I haven't seen in two days. No ammonia. The fish was big, the second largest in my tank, close to 10 cm. The other fish which all seem fine are two clowns, two damsels, a mandarin, a pyjama fish, a hippo tang and a valentini. All my parameters are OK. What on earth could have happened to it and what happens if it has died under a rock? The tank is around 60 gallons

They like to jump.

I had one jump. Found it under the stand, under some boxes of medication. I felt bad because the first time I looked to see if he had jumped I couldn't find him. In my experience diamonds don't typically hide out for extended periods of time like some others do.

Jumping is not a possibility. There is a lid

Any gaps in lid AT All? I thought I had mine completely covered and lost two of these through the smallest gap. Like 1/4 inch. I swear they see the gaps. I was one that said “no way“ can it get though that Gap until I witnessed it.

No gaps.

Is it possible it died and the others ate it before any ammonia spike? But it was bigger than any of the others except perhaps the hippo

If it just happened today, give it a few hours. Sunday I thought mine was dead for sure. Hadn't seen it once all day and even while feeding the tank. Later that night he finally popped out of wherever he was hiding just before the lights were set to ramp down.

No overflow, no sump, I checked powerheads and filters

Yes, I've seen fish die and then the hermit carbs & shrimp will have the entire body gone. I feel the shrimp are especially fast. Not sure how long exactly, but definitely in time to prevent ammonia spike.

Thanks. I have no shrimp. Just an emerald crab and snails and the fish I mentioned

If your tank does not have a good sand base which is mature, this fish can starve.

Thanks. The tank has been running 2-3 years, it has a 1' sand base which was really dirty before I got it and it seemed to be sifting constantly

That rules that out.
I have never been able to keep these fish more than a year.
No upfront signs before missing, one day fine, next day gone.
Either find it on the floor, dead on the bottom, or just never found.
Gave up after 20 years.

Really? Very strange. I had this one for about a month. No signs, eating well, swimming well, too large for any aggression...and just disappeared. Would you thing a yellow watchman goby is better? Are they sand sifters too?

In addition to sifting the sand bed, mine routinely eats frozen mysis as well as Hikari brand algae wafers.
