Disaster averted but I need advice on a new return pump

Woke up this morning to the sound of my gyre splashing and having a blast. Power supply went out on my return pump. I've got a 75 gallon with a 26 gallon trigger systems sump. Can anyone suggest a good pump to replace the failed jebao unit that failed. The old return was gifted to me so I have no idea what the gph was in it but it was a dc pump.

Glad you caught it before catastrophe struck!! I have the same sump as you and I have always run the Sicce 3.0 Return pump. That leaves return pump fits perfectly along with my heater which is stuck to the section divider on the left, and a small hydor wavemaker that is stuck to the back wall of the compartment just to keep the surface water from becoming stagnant. It also helps move the water around the heater better. I had one issue with the pump before and had to replace it after it burn up; however, it was completely my fault and not the pumps. I would definitely recommend them.

Definitely went south rather quickly. Further troubleshooting shows a failed power supply. I'll have to figure out how to setup an alert for future Potential failure.

Consider getting two pumps (sharing the load) - and make sure your anti siphon plumbing will prevent powerhead parties - when they are shut off (or fail).

There are some inexpensive DC pumps on amazon that I have been using for a UV sterilizer and Protein skimmer (which I would trust with redundancy). For a single pump setup, investing more in a high quality pump might be smarter. Get DC if it is submersible and heat is an issue.

I've been super happy with the Varios4 in the same setup. 75g display and Trigger systems 26" Platinum sump. I have it working off of my WaveEngine so no power supply or separate controller required, It runs and is powered directly off my WaveEngine as well as my Gyre 330's

Good thing you caught it early. You can move the heater from the sump into the display with a powerhead directed towards it and maybe an airline until you get a replacement return pump

Indeed, if you running only one return pump invest in something that won’t break.
It all depends on what you’re willing to spend. If I had unlimited funds I would go for something from abyzz for example.

Why not just replace the power supply? Small 24v power supplies are cheap and easy to come by.

Luckily I have a spare mag 7 that I got for this very reason. I use to use it for water changes and what not. Waiting on the hardware store to open so I can get some unions!

Aside from the giant mess that resembles frantic panic my tank is back in business! Had to do a little plumbing and basically remove my previously installed manifold. It's not pretty but it should work out ok. What a difference from 2600 gph to 700! Temp is slowly climbing and aside from ticked off fish everything looks good. Further investigation shows that pump failing around 1 in the morning. About 5 hours without heat and a pump. Just to be safe I did a 20 gallon water change in the process, basically drained the sump while I had it all tore apart. Will commence researching pumps. I really limes the d.c. Pump that was in there. I need to also replace the check valve in my return line. It didn't work likebit usually does. Luckily nothing ended up on the floor! I mean to tell ya the Simon was full to the brim when I first discovered this.

Amazon - "24v power supply". Anywhere from about $10-25 depending on quality and amperage needed. (you can buy a bigger one than you need and power multiple pumps).

A spare pump is always useful.


It may be worth going through your plumbing and rearraigning things so that you don't need the check valve. They will fail - depending on them is a recipe for disaster.

I found the proper power supply for 25 bux. Any ideas on replugging to get away from a check valve, never heard of not having one. It's a standard 75 gallon with an internal weir and the return is up over the back at the moment. In the wait I have a return going through a gate valve and a safety running straight to the sump.

Regardless of which DC pump you have a power supply can always fail. Therefore either run two pumps for redundancy, and make sure to have a siphon break.
Or at the very least have a spare power supply as usually that is the most common component to fail. The pump itself is fairly reliable.

new power supply ordered, will likely go ahead and get a different pump and use this faulty pump/PS as a backup. I have been needing to redo some silly plumbing anyway so this incident has forced my hand. Still researching pumps!
