So I woke up and all my fish were dead! :( I am CRUSHED. I thought I had saved them but clearly I didn't not. None of my CUC perished. Also, my yellow wrasse is no where to be found - I am assuming he died under the rocks - will the CUC take care of him?

Water tested at:
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 2.0! *it was zero last night
Nitrates 40! * also zero last night
Salinity 1.02

So what do I do next? Should I let my tank run for a few months without fish to make sure any remaining chemicals are eliminated? If yes, do I perform water changes? How frequently?

And how long should I wait to start adding fish into my tank again? I would want to get them and QT them first obviously. And of course I will need to start slow.

For those that didn't see my post from yesterday, here it is:

Today was my, "scrub down the inside glass" day. I went about my business. About 20 minutes after I was done, I walked by my tank and the fish were all on the bottom of the tank in clear distress. Upon further investigation my CB angel and one of my clowns was dead. I went into panic mode. And then I realized I had drenched my hands in hand sanitizer about five minutes before I stuck them in the tank. I totally forgot to wash them off.

Well I immediately dosed prime and then emptied 50% of the tank. Increase the airflow into the tank. THANKFULLY within ten minutes of changing the water, everybody seemed back to themselves.

Three hours later and it's like nothing happened. I loved my CB - he was my first "real" fish after my two clowns. #crushed #learnedmylesson

So, remember to always rinse your hands and arms before sticking them in the tank!

Sanitizer likely, yes. other than water change add carbon and wait about a week or two and restock slowly.
Please re-verify salinity- it should be 1.024-1.026. Tank temp= 78 deg
I'd be crushed too, but this is how we learn in this hobby- advice and error. Best of luck moving forward

1.020? That is still pretty low - not low enough to kill your fish, although I don't know how it would combine with the effects of the hand sanitizer.

I am sorry for your loss, losing fish is horrible :'(

Do you suggest I take out all my live rock and rinse it off? Should I move the CUC to QT? I have two fighting conch, a boat load of snail and small hermits.

So sorry to hear about this. I would be devastated to lose all my fish!

Some lessons in this hobby are learned in the most unforgiving manor.

If it were me...

If your CUC is still alive but all fish gone (you haven't mentioned corals?) I would work on getting things stable. Water changes and carbon. I wouldn't pull rock out and rinse, probably wouldn't do any good and would just add to the general instability

Thanks - it was a fish only tank - no corals. Appreciate the help!

Odd that you would be seeing Nitrite. No idea what is in hand sanitizer. Perhaps some of the residue broke down into Nitrite? Perhaps the sanitizer killed some of your nitrifying bacteria?

I'm very noobish, but as on top of the crisis as you were, nothing dead sat in the tank long enough to decay. I would want to see that the tank is still properly cycled before restocking, but I def defer to those with years of experience.

Did your fish have white eyes? Could be bacterial in nature. Inverts are sensitive but fish are more sensitive to bacterial infections than inverts

Could also check ingredients of sanitizer. If all are biodegradable then time, carbon and water changes should take care of it. As others have stated, you cant be in this hobby for very long and not make mistakes.

In essence, a hand sanitizer is an antimicrobial. Maybe what it did was to kill some or all of your nictrifying bacteria?
