Hi guys,

Any idea on what this clown has? It stoped eating today and I think it’s breathing heavily. The fin is starting to rip. Is it fin rot?

Those tears in the fin are hallmarks of aggression - either from the other clown or the rest of the tankmates. As aggression gets worse, fish will stop eating.

I just got them last week and they are in the nursery box as I am waiting for the anemone. These two clowns are the only fish in the box. Are you suggesting the small one is bully the other?

I would complete the quarantine method as described in the stickies. As for waiting for an anemone, I wouldn't keep them in a small container for that. Clowns should have a 20g due to their aggressive nature. In the end there's no where near a guarantee they will want anything to do with the anemone anyway.

It’s definitely possible. Usually the bigger one is the meaner one, but while they’re new both are still figuring out the hierarchy. The long fins make the bigger one a target for any fish.

Good to know! Thanks a lot!

I’ll put them in my refugeum, maybe that will be a bigger space for them. Thanks!

Please repost pics in tank with a side view. Its near impossible to assess a fish looking at its back, top down.
Any loss of appetite?
Additionally fins appear to be a product of aggression or fighting opposed to rot. Again, need full images of fish.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

Sharply ripped fins like that is almost always from tankmate aggression. However, the two clowns seem paired up and it would be less likely that a smaller clown would harm a larger one. That is a likely possibility, perhaps because they are in a smaller holding container?

However, the ripped fins may just be mechanical damage because it’s a long fin clown. The fish does seem to be breathing fast (tough to see from the top though).

Are both clowns not eating?

Do you think the fish breathing more rapidly is due to being in the bowl?

Could be - I couldn't tell for certain, but it seemed to be breathing faster than the small one - and if so, since they were both in the same bowl, I sort of discounted that as an issue.....

Thanks for all the information, whatever happened to the female was acting quick. She perished this evening. She refused to eat on Saturday and started to lose control of her body this morning. Maybe it’s some kind of internal infection.

Sorry to hear. Is the remaining fish still eating?
