Hello all,
I have recently put all my fish in qt tanks. Because I had a powder blue tang that was showing signs of velvet. He passed away today with a damsel. I have a purple tang in the same qt. Now showing sign of velvet. I increased copper (using copper power) to 2.15 ppm ( Hanna checker). I took some video of the purple tang. Would like to know how bad it is. And should I go up to 2.5ppm or >.

Thanks for your replies

i cannot see videos.

Thanks for the pictures. I couldn't see the videos.

I think velvet looks to be the right diagnosis. Copper Power at 2.15 ppm should be high enough. Although, tangs seem to handle copper just fine, so it wouldn't hurt to raise it closer to 2.5.

That does look pretty bad, but I would just stay the course with copper. You are waiting for the parasites to fall off, which can take a day or two I believe. The parasites have a shorter life cycle than with ich, but that means it can kill faster too.

I'm not sure you can judge 'how bad it is' from a video - unless you're a veterinarian. I would say you've done the best you can - Making sure the copper concentration does not drop down with water changes, etc. I will hope for the best - and I cannot view the pictures/video well - so I will assume velvet. Its a hard disease to treat - so my best wishes to you!!!!!!

PS - a freshwater dip can provide "Temporary relief" - you could consider that. I'm not a huge believer - others will weigh in.

IMO this is late stage ich, possibly with secondary fluke/bacterial infection. The fish isn't breathing as fast as it would be with velvet, and the white mucus/spots are more pronounced than they would be with velvet. Either way, copper would be the treatment of choice (except for the flukes).

I'm finding more and more people having issues controlling active disease with copper power at less than 2.5 ppm.

I wonder if you might want to give the fish a 5 minute FW dip to try and buy some more time? It could prove fatal, but my general thought is - if a 5 minute FW dip is lethal the fish wasn't going to live long enough for the treatment to work anyway. That would also knock back any flukes, just to buy some more time.

Looks like velvet. I bet it’s had it for awhile by the look of all the scars. Might not last more then a few more hours I’m sorry. This is one of those cases where more invasive prophylactic QT protocol was needed the moment that fish entered the trade.

Hemdal just wrote an article that indicates that FW has less impact on velvet, if not mistaken

i think you are right. i have been looking at him for the past 2-3 hrs. doesn't look good. let see if he makes it through the night

looks like i was took late... all fish (5 in total) in the QT has passed away. the way all the fish died looks like velvet. Copper power was at 2.15ppm for only 3 days. Just wasnt quick enough.
