Are the things circled in red a disease or just a discoloration on my sailfin? I put him in a freshwater dip and nothing came off. Additionally, ignore the white specks that look like ich or something, they're just particulates floating in the water. Thanks for the help!

Looks like they could be flukes. Try a freshwater dip and see if they fall off.

Interesting.....They're too small to be any type of parasitic isopod. and way to big to be ich... @Jay Hemdal what do you think?

I'm guessing bacterial.

Like a bacterial infection?

Evening,

I am not the disease guy on the squad for sure. Just a few thought. I do not think flukes. I think the circle area is a physical injury. Do you see it present anywhere else on the fish on either side? If not just watch for bacteria infection. The ich, I would treat with diet, but I would not recommend that for newer folks.

hope jay stop by soon

Edit, im the future, do you fw dip in a black or dark bucket. How long did you do your dip?

No the only evidence and symptoms I see are the one spot circled. I also do not believe the fish has ich. The water had some white particulates floating in it when I took the picture and thus the picture makes it look like the fish has ich.

Ahh,

Then I think we are ok. I am thinking injury, but we still want to be sure. like I said I am not disease guy and crabs and flipper are very knowledgeable. I would watch very closely for any type of white cottony issues to signal infection and hopefully an expert will tell us for sure.

Great looking fish.

my fish have cut fins and discolorations sometimes i believe its from fighting when the lights go and diving into the rocks or being chased into them they always heal after a few days i wouldnt worry about it unless it starts to spread just keep an eye on it

Hmm okay thanks for all the help so far it's greatly appreciated

More questions, of course. ;Hilarious ;)

when did you first notice them? And how is the fish doing today?

When I zoom in, it looks like scales are missing. There appears to be a spot on the lower portion of the body too. I tend to agree with an injury of some sort. Luckily fish can recover pretty quickly from injuries of that type. I’ll be watching in case you get a different diagnosis. I’d love to add it to my knowledge bank.

Can we have some additional history?
How long have the spots been there?
Did they show up all at once, or gradually over time?
What tankmates is it in with?
How long have you had it?
Is it in a QT or DT?
How is it doing post-dip?
Do the spots show through the fin, or are spots on one side, not mirror imaged on the other?

Thanks,

Jay

First noticed them yesterday and the fish looks to be doing totally fine today. See my next reply for more info. Thanks for all the help!

Yeah so I actually just picked him up from the LFS yesterday and did not notice the spots at the store, but they very well could've been there because they only show when his sail is fully extended. The guy at the LFS told me the fish was given from another customer who had the fish for 2-3 years and it had been at the store for over a month and he had full confidence in the health of the fish. At the store I believe his only tank mate was a yellow tang. Unfortunately, it is in my DT for 2 reasons. My QT tank is only 20 gallons so I worried that would be way too small for it and stress it out significantly and the guy at the store convinced me it would be fine in the DT due to it being a previously owned fish and it being at the store for a while. He looks to be doing totally fine today. I am honestly unsure if the spots show through the fin, as I mentioned in another reply they only show when his sail is fully extended, but I'll try to find out today and get back to you.

Thanks so much for all the help!

I’d just watch the spots for an increase in size or number over the next week. I bet they go away in two weeks or less. They do look pretty superficial at this point.

Jay
