So I'm building a 125 softies/lps reef tank. Got a killer deal on a used RR 125 along with it's two return pumps, two powerheads and wavemaker. It came with three 24" aquatic life led lights. I've been following the brs ULM series and intend to adapt some of those principles.

Sump is a 40B that I had lying around. The display fuge is going to be a custom acrylic header tank mounted above the DT . Dimensions will be 72x12x12. Since I don't the the strip lights will be adequate for my DT I'm going to try and use them on the display fuge. I'm planning on a separate return pump for the display fuge and have it drain into the same sump as the DT. I was considering a RO Varios 2 which I'll T to also feed the "cryptic" fuge that will be under the stand. Not sure if I need to go with a bigger pump though. Thinking about placing a powerhead on each end with a wavemaker and have them run in an opposing ramp cycle(ie when one if 100% the other would be at it's lowest setting and they would slowly ramp to trade flow rate). Two MP10's maybe or something else?

Tank will be for my maxi mini nem, zoos and palys, and various slower growing macros.

The cryptic fuge would be fed as mentioned by a T from the return pump for the display fuge. Flow rate would be quite low(how low I haven't decided). I'm thinking of running the return line all the way to the bottom of the tank and terminating it in a spray bar style array/grid to try and ensure the water has to flow through all the layers of rock/rubble before getting to the overflow which would drain into the common sump. Originally I was going to have it made custom in black acrylic with just a single viewing pane, but I'm leaning towards just drilling a 29 gallon I have laying around and using it instead.

Any thoughts or ideas that I should consider?

Lol, yeah- 29g blacked out with paint and a spray bar at the bottom. I’m planning to feed mine at 100gph

Too is painted acrylic, window cover is corrugated plastic in black. HD sell it as Cloroplast

Inside will be 6 platforms made of eggcrate and pvc separators/legs.
Overflows via 2x 1.5 bulkheads into my main refugium section of a 125 sump

Nice! How thick is the acrylic you are using as a top cover? The stuff I see at HD is too thin and would bow alot if used as a cover. Cool idea using the chloroplast as a window cover.

1/4 inch. I bought it originally for making a tiny mangrove tank, but decided to use a 20long instead. The hd 1/8th stuff is definitely too thin

Also- that ball valve will be switched out for a gate to better control flow. That was just placed for tests and will go back on my fill station

What are you going to place on the eggcrate layers? Dry rock rubble, broken up live rock? Or are you just trying to get things to grow on the eggcrate itself as I've read some do to maintain better flow?

I was going to buy a really small package of rock and hitchhikers + sponge from the guy who’s name I have forgotten. Has a website detailing the cryptic organisms and has packages available. Probably one shelf worth spread over the 6, then let everything colonize the eggcrate to keep flow as consistent as possible.

Steve Three is all about cryptic zone filtration.

I turned out the lights on my 30G EcoSystem mud macro refugium after 24 years of operation. It was full of worms pods and micro stars before turning out the lights. That was one year ago.

someplace like reeffarmers? Looks like they have cryptic seed packages which look cool but pricey.

I think if you have some good quality live rock like what is harvested by TBS or Gulf Live Rock, you will get some cryptic sponges plus so much more.

That's actually what I was considering doing. I've gotten rock from Gulfliverock before and was very happy with it. I have some sort of red sponge growing on the underside of most of my DT rock in my 90
