I'm planning on adding a 20 gallon display refugium into my 40 breeder and was looking for some experienced knowledge. Do I need to let the 20 cycle before plumbing it to the 40? Which macro algeas do you recommend? Should I keep my canister filter on till the refugium can establish? Anything like that will help

I have a 39 gal display refugium. Right now I have dragon's breath. I also put my problem corals in there like my colts and xenia. Mine is still not hooked up to the main tank and its been 7 months... I did add a couple fish, as I wanted some movement. It has pods and so does my display. I have everything to hook the two tanks but want to find someone with knowledge to do it right. I got my macros on ebay and need to get more eventually. I also am using a canister as a hob just wasn't good enough. Not sure if I'll keep it going for extra filtration when the two tanks are plumbed together or not.

If you are using more rock I would cure it over a few weeks so the phosphates come out or if you look online there is some acid cures that are faster but I don’t know how they work. Since the tanks are connected the bacteria is shared so no need to actually cycle the tank.
Dragons breath, caulerpa prolifera, ulva and gracilaria would be my personal choices for nutrient export and pod hoarding, but there are prettier ones such as ochtodes, mermaids fan, blue scroll, etc.
