Setting up a 120g, 4*2*2, center overflow with 1.5 in drain, two 3/4in returns. There are three horizontal slots on each side of the overflow. The water level is landing between the two upper slots so it's not skimming the surface. To get water through the top slot, the water level goes high enough that you can see the eurobracing when viewing the tank from the front. Any ideas to improve the surface skimming?

My thought is to remove some material of the second slot, to add a few mm of height.

I hesitate to make a permanent change, esp if it is not the problem.

Any help appreciated!

Pics if they help:

From the look of it its still skimming the surface!

Yeah but there is a protein film on it, so I don't believe it's getting skimmed properly. Looking at it from above you can see the water hit between the slots, just can't capture that without sticking my phone in the water.

All the crap on the surface is there, not just a bad picture :-(

Oh here's the surface picture.

Oh I understand now. Yea them horizontal slots blow. Do you have anyway to increase or decrease the flow?
If you have a ball valve on your return you could decrease the flow just slightly so it falls below that slot.

Yeah I have tried increasing the flow but get to where the eurobracing is visible so I think it should be going through the second slot..
I guess I need to try and reduce the flow.

Reducing flow made no difference, ended up cutting it. Made the two upper slots in the center section one, I figured I was gonna need to use gutter guard anyway...
Now have a nice clear surface and I think it has increased the surface agitation as well.

Never really thought about those slots and water level. One thing to look out for if I ever get another tank.
