Disposal of di resin

Anyone do anything special to dispose of depleted di resin? I’ve been tossing it into the trash but was curious if there was another option due to micro plastics etc etc. Seems like that stuff would find its way to the ocean in no time no matter where it’s buried.
 
I recharge mine a number of times before finally tossing it. Unfortunately, I know of no recycling available, at least in my opart of the globe.

DI resin is plastic and can be tossed with the household trash. This is, however, highly disruptive to the environment if it gets to the ocean. I will, once I can no longer recharge it, find at what temperature it melts and melt it down into as large a block of plastic as possible and then toss. Some of my resin is getting close to that point as it changes color and exhausts faster than when new. I will document it when the time comes but I think that it is most responsible to recharge our resins as much as possible. It is relatively easy to do. Further, you can keep reusing the lye solution or Hydrochloric acid till it, as well, becomes ineffective. Plus I'm cheap and it is very costly to get resins to me.

Because, seriously, what are we doing? How much do we reef hobbyists understand the hypocrisy with regards to destroying the ocean we want to replicate in our homes, but I’m sure we rarely realize how much plastic we buy. All of this acrylic -- which I believe is still not easily recycled. But worse , RODI resins—-the materials, disposal, recycling, regeneration are not talked about with regards to the damaging environmental effects we are causing; these are literally the micro-bead polymers we hear about on the news. And some of us, it seems, throw into our water drains while our waste water infrastructure have no way to process but dump into our oceans. Even drying out and bagging for regular trash disposal only sends it into a landfill which will at some point probably find its way into our oceans anyways.

I’ve not seen any push for alternatives. Or much talk about recharging practices. I've found only a few old threads on recharging that were years old. I mean...what are we doing?

Thoughts? Resources for information?
 
How is something buried in a landfill going to find it’s way into the ocean? I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure a significant amount of engineering and effort go into designing them to avoid that very thing.

I think estimates are that 98% of trash found in the ocean is put there by undeveloped countries which lack waste disposal infrastructure. Of the remaining 2%, the US is responsible for extraordinarily little when population is taken into consideration.

I’m not saying we don’t need to do more, obviously we need better options for long term sustainability, but right now, we aren’t the problem.

I totally agree with you. As a whole, we need to do better about plastics. Not to derail the thread, but I do want to point out, to be morally consistent, one would never consume any fish or fish products if you agree to the "hypocrisy with regards to destroying the oceans".

I live close to NYC and all of the garbage from Manhattan goes onto barges and gets dumped into the ocean. Also almost all of the landfills around me are close to water either a freshwater stream or right next to the bays. I also would love to see some new insight on recharging or recycling options. Just as others stated, we try to make a living ocean in our tanks yet destroy the actual oceans in the process. Plastic packaging that all of our corals and tank parts come in, to the manufacturing processes used to produce the many many products we use daily in our tanks. SAVE THE OCEANS

It hasn’t been dumped in the ocean for a long time.
 
Similarly, what are people doing about carbon (in my case BRS ROX carbon)? I used to get as much of it as I could out easily into the trash and then wash the remaining down the drain. Recently I've gotten lazy and I'm just washing it down the drain. I have a small tank and I don't use much carbon, but this feels wrong.

That’s an appalling claim. One that I find difficult to believe a US city or state would still do. So I looked it up to find that was the case until 1992. It’s still appalling that we were doing something so irresponsible so recently.

I agree. Once you go off shore and out of state territory I forget the actual radius but i believe its something stupid like 3 miles off shore youre aloud to dump all waste into the ocean. Makes me think that maybe a lot of the garbage can be sneaked out and disposed of off shore much cheaper then actually recycling or burning.
