I'm looking for a dissolved oxygen meter or (preferably) monitor for a commercial application. A Hach meter has been recommended by the local aquatic veterinarian simply because that is a brand that she has used extensively. Is there a cheaper option that is "good enough"? I know for some things there are "good enough" options, other things there is not, and I'm not sure if DO is one of those things. No sense in spending more than required for a Bentley model if the Audi model is perfectly fine. :p I need to make sure DO is close to saturation, and be able to make adjustments when needed to keep saturation.

I see Neptune makes one, but by the time you add an Apex to control it, it's the same price as Hach. Is it as good as Hach? Is the Neptune a "good enough" option? If so, this might be a good option because of the ability to monitor "a bunch of other things" too, but if the DO sensor isn't very good then it would be useless.

Everything I've head is yes. It is very accurate.

Sorry, I've not really done any investigation of oxygen meters for aquaria.

The one Eric Borneman used for his studies (YSI-58) is more than $2,000.

Ok thanks. I have been seeing the YSI meters mentioned in various literature I've been reading. It's quite a few bucks when I'm not actually sure if I have a problem or not. Haha! This meter could be "priceless" for me, or it could be a waste of money. Can't tell without checking, and so far I've not been able to find one to do any sampling.

Anyone else able to help?

Hello, here at Hanna Instruments we have a wide range of affordable and accurate dissolved oxygen portable meters used in a variety of industries such as aquaculture, waste water and environmental monitoring.

The HI98196 is a waterproof portable logging multiparameter meter that monitors up to 7 different water quality parameters including 5 measured and 2 calculated. The microprocessor based multi-sensor probe allows for the measurement of key parameters including pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen, and temperature.

@Hanna Instruments Considering the number of Hanna instruments I already own, I don't know why I didn't think to check out Hanna for DO meters! These definitely look interesting, and the price points are a nice surprise. Thank you for pointing them out! :)

A question, I see the photograph of the hi9142 meter shows DO in percent, will it read supersaturation where DO is over 100%?

The percentage displayed in the picture represents calibration mode where you are trying to reach 100% DO concentration, the unit itself reads from 0-19.99mg/L (ppm) DO concentration, not in oxygen percent saturation.

Most fish need greater than 5 mg/L Dissolved oxygen level on average, are you planning on using pressured oxygen in you system or is your culture operation an outdoor pond? Are you concerned with gas bubble disease brought about from supersaturation?
