can anyone explain why this fish is $1000 but only gets 2 3/4"?

Never mind look at these, the fish on the right only get 1.5" max and just sold for $9,999....

Try and find another one for sale and you'll have your answer. Many of the more expensive fish also come from deep water requiring the use of a rebreather, they then have to be decompressed slowly on the way up. Others come from remote locations that don't get collected very often. I'm sure there is also a few that cost is associated with hype too.
 
I don't understand why someone would buy a fish for $10k. I mean what would you do if it died the next day?

Chances are if they had the $$$ to drop in the first place they'll be OK.
 
I looked it up and they are found at depths of around 500ft.

Its pretty dangerous to travel to those depths to catch the fish that live 300+ feet below the surface. I've looked into the rebreather and scuba application for even diving 150-200 with any sort of bottom time and the effects of helium, nitrogen, and oxygen can be scary. I'd ask lot for a fish I risked my health for as well. Also I blame it all on Japan. They are closer and buy all the really cool fish since you don't have to ship them very far.
