I have been building some tank etc with acrylic and I wanted to try my hand at an external algae scrubber. would you do anything differently?

I find ATS's a pita. I built my own as well, ran great for a an ats, rivaled all the retail ones, but I still ditched it. 2 things I see right off the bat, you are not getting enough coverage and flow across the screen; this could be because your slot is not wide enough and/or your flow is too slow. The 2nd thing is that pup is going to be slurping and gurgling like no tomorrow. This is a tricky thing even with the retail ones. You need to balance the flow to cover the screen and drain in a way not to slurp and gurgle. PITA. Think of the drain as an overflow, the water in the bottom should just cover the drain, insert a rigid tube to create a vent, this will allow for smooth flow. Still tuning this in a pita. Good luck

Here's the one I built: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/cheap-diy-enclosed-algae-scrubber.349286/
