DIY Alkatronic reagent

I can't make out the normality reading on the attached photo. I am not even sure if it has one as this looks more like an industrial version rather than a Standardized acid reagent. I would look for a standardized solution like we discuss in the thread here, rather than attempt to use an industrial acid mixture. The purpose of the standardized solution is for them to be an exact normality, which is crucial to the task at hand (mixing Alkatronic reagent).

I also looked into using (industrial) Muratic acid, but after realizing that the cost savings would be minimal over the standardized solutions, which are already the correct strength, I decided not to pursue that route. It is just one more area for errors to creep in to, and I have no trouble making those myself. ;)

For anyone looking to use hydrochloric acid instead of sulfuric, you need to only concern yourself with the normality value (N). Ignore the molarity value (M), as it will differ between these two types as sulfuric has 2 hydrogen ions and hydrochloric has 1.

Yes! This is a considerable way to lower the ongoing Alkatronic operation costs. Now if I could find replacement tubing...
Check out US Plastics. That's where I found tubing to rebuild DOS heads. Though the plastic housing does eventually fatigue and need replacement, I wear out maybe 2-3 replacement tubes before I start to question the housing.

Sorry, I can't help you. I live in Canada. Oddly, Amazon in the UK sells no acid standards of any kind (that I can see). Perhaps another forum member based in the UK can provide some guidance.

In Sweden we can buy muriatic acid in building marts or some paint shops. I guess the same is possible in the UK.
It is normally about 7% and called "Diluted muriatic acid" (but in Swedish of course).
The concentration is varying from bottle to bottle or brand to brand so You have to make a solution and compare with the original. 7% is about 2N so begin with 12 ml in 1 liter water and then adjust to have the correct reading with Your Alkatronic. And dont save the recipe. Next time it maybe is somewhat different. Be careful to not inhale the fume. It is best to do it outdoors.

Quick question on diy reagent I’m sell my kh director and getting alkatronic, I have 2ltrs of 1.0N hydrocloric acid i don’t want to waste how would I dilute this solution for the alkatronic

This is my recipe:

To make 5L of alkatronic reagent

100 ml 1M HCl plus 4900 ml water

Instructions:

  1. Fill a 100 ml volumetric flask with 1M acid
  2. Put the acid in a 1L volumetric flask and fill to 1L with ro water
  3. Add the solution to the alkatronic feed container.
  4. Add 4 more L RO water to container.

So for 2.5ltr of reagent 50ml of acid to 2450ml ro? no further dilution needed?
 
That will work but this is cheaper!

I thought about getting that one, but I worried (and this will show my ignorance) that maybe it would lose potency over time. Is that not something to worry about?
 
Keep in a dark cool place and I don't think that is an issue. Even if it is you can calibrate the Alkatronic to adjust for any discrepancy.
