DIY Amino Acid Formula

Interesting. How long have you been using and do you have any before and after photos? Have you documented any anecdotal evidence this is effective? Or, have sources to indicate its efficacy?

It’s a solid estimate of levels used in many amino coral foods.
There are many papers describing coral amino uptake.
This formula seems to work well in my Aquarium.
Give it a try!
Scientific evidence for this?

Levels are not being scrutinized. The amino's used are. Can you cite some papers with links? Preferably listing the amino's used in BCAA that correlate to those used by corals. Please.

I’m not a scientist. But I’ve found this formula to work well. I simply posted this in order to spread some ideas, not to be attacked. Although I would appreciate your input on what amino acids to use. Thanks.

I hope you didn't feel like I was attacking you. I absolutely LOVE DIY and it's new territory for me in terms of creating any sort of supplements beyond element containing compounds or custom food blending.

I'll also admit that I used to think aminos were snake oil but I think there's enough argument for legitimate benefit. I read though the "

Uptake of dissolved free amino acids by the scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata "

article but didn't see a formula in their methodology section. Also did you find specific evidence on storage and longevity of mixture in storage?

Which journal article did you source the formula from.

I think a DIY mix would be awesome, especially based on the difference in cost.

Or you could do your own homework.....

Tough crowd considering OP is freely sharing what works for them.

@OP, thanks for the info, def gonna take a look.

Every time I post something I immediately dive back into the trench and duck for cover. This place can be a hostile environment for people whom wish to exchange ideas and information.

Best Of Luck!

I took this formula from an approximation of ingredients found on a label of Acropower. I do not have the label link.

The vinegar acts as a preservative and a possible source of carbon.

Let me know how it works for you.

Regards,

I am interested in your dosing schedule and how long the formula stays viable.
No shade on your information!!!

I have only been mixing 500 ml at a time. I believe the vinegar works as a preservative. That said, I do not have any information or data on its current Shelf life. I’d be interested to see what the shelf life of acropower or other commercial mixes are.

I dose approximately 5ml per week. In all honesty I have not been dosing it consistently daily. I have noticed “healthier” looking corals, perhaps some increase in colour, although I do not have any evidence of this. I should start taking pictures. Keep in mind I have only been dosing this for all of 3 weeks. Perhaps not enough time for any noticeable changes.

How much do you dose on what size tank?
Type of tank, is SPS, LPS...
How long does the mix stay good for
Thanks for the info!!!
I have a 40 gallon. Mixed sps, lps,a couple of softies.
I dose around 1ml per day. Randomly.

I have tried to include amino acid extracted from silkworm pupae, in addition to oyster peptides, into my homebrew coral food mix.

I would say both the feeding response and coral health is very good.
