DIY Amphipod culture!

I think you have to upload videos to YouTube then either imbed the video or post a link to it :)

Could you explain in more detail how your phyto culture works? What the bottles are for, the tubbing, how it grows, and how you feed the pods with it?

Should be on tomorrow morning lol.

Ill try to post a thread on it tomorrow and go into detail.

But the bottles are the the vessels that you culture the phyto in.

The tubing is airline to provide oxygen and keep the culture mixed up so it doesn't settle.

As to how they grow, they are plant cells so they get their energy from the light, and Guillards f2 fertilizer
(micro algae fertilizer)

I do not feed the amphipods with phyto, i was going to raise copepods and feed them the phyto but I'm not getting any copepods till i have phyto by the gallon.

Following! Are these better or same as brine shrimp hatchery? Thanks, Katie

I know with tigger pods they recommend not getting culture water in the DT. Any thoughts?

Copepods and amphipods are different. Tigger, which are a breed of copepods, aren't as hardy as amphipods.

Copepods need fresh saltwater.

Amphipods, however, are some pretty lil hardy things. If you want to start a tank of amphipods, you could use half DT water and half fresh salt water.

So what are you feeding the pods? I have been wanting to do this.

Also the hoofas did you rinse them in vinegar before starting this? I would be nervous of a chemical leaching from the hoofa.

if I don't need a phyto culture I will do this.

Digging up an old post. I’m going to try to get my own culture going. How did everything work out? Has anyone else had success or any tips to offer?

Well guys, I'm gonna try my hand at culturing Amphipods!

After a week of research (and waiting for my starter culture to come in), I got my tank set up. So, heres a tutorial of how i did it.

Step one:
supplies.
(Got everything from walmart)

10 g. aquarium
(Some people use 5 g. buckets)

Small aerator and an airstone

Small heater

And 3 shower sponge things.
(Hoofas maybe?)

3 or 4 g. Of fresh saltwater (RO/DI)
(Same salinity as my main tank)

Fish food
(I use new life spectrum pellets)

And your starter culture!
(Got mine from Reefs2Go)

Step two:
Rinse EVERYTHING. Maybe it's just me, but i rinse everything i use.

Step three:
Add the water to the tank, heater, aerator, and sponge/hoofa things.

Step four:
Once the water is the right temp, add your culture!

And that, ladies and gents, is what i have done so far!
( got it all done in the past couple hours)

From the research I've done, when the population thickens, add water.
Once a month, or when the water starts to look/smell dirty, do a 50% water change. Some people use a brine shrimp net to harvest.
(Im just going to take one of the hoofas and shake it in my main tank)

Keep in mind, this is the first time I've ever done this so idk how it'll turn out. I plan on throwing a lil fish food in each day and adding/changing water when needed. Will keep updated!!!

If you have any questions, ask away, I'll do my best to answer.

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!
