I in the planning stage of a 46 gal. Bow front and have been reading about the advantages of them. I’m really partial to sand bottoms so I was think how I could do both. I was thinking about using diy rock techniques to make a rock bottom for the back half of the tank that’s a little higher than the sand bed. This would allow me to put a power head in the back of the tank to flush waste out of areas I won’t be able to reach with the vac. And if I decide to go full bare bottom It would be easier to get the sand out because it’s will be in the front of the tank.
Was looking for some feed back. I haven’t heard of anyone doing this and wondering what the down side of doing this could be.

I guess to clarify I am interested in doing half bare and half sand.

I don’t know if it would be too much work keeping it 1/2 bare and 1/2 sandbed .

once rocks are in place , you won’t get much for waste under the rocks Depending on flow.

once the sand is in … I wouldn’t try disturbing it to remove it later .

vac every water change will minimize the accumulated waste that could potentially cause issues later .

My advice : and only my opinion .
choose one or the other .
keeping bare and sand separate will be almost impossible

what are your plans for stocking ?
Sand dwelling gobies ,wrasses ?

As of now I was thinking a pair of clowns, a tang, goby and clean up crew. Do you think the false bottom being higher than the sand bend with flow flushing the back keep the back clean? I just heard some people mentioning that a sand bend can be a time bomb if it’s not maintained and the back behind the rocks is pretty hard to maintain the sand bed.
