Hi guys,

I am planning on building a new stand for my 20 X 20 Solana Cube. The dimensions of the stand will be 25 W X 30 L X 38 H. I will be building a frame for the stand but am undecided on whether to use 1X4's or 2 X 4's. The frame will then be skinned with either a Pine or a Oak wood to add more strength and finish to the stand.

Here is the plan:

Top:
1X6 frame.

Bottom:
1X4

Sides:
1X4

Thoughts?

I don't think you'll have issues with that plan. Make sure to use a good fastener system like KREG Pocket Hole Jig and Screws and glue for good measure. Factory stands are all 1xX material so I wouldn't worry on a smaller tank. Anything 55G or larger and I'd say move to 2xX lumber.

The interesting thing about stands is it depends on the design. Engineered correctly and a 1x4 can take a lot of weight. Do it wrong and it won't hold nearly as much. Your tank is small though so with a good design it'll be fine.

Yes I am going with a common frame design that some engineer posted on another forum.

Since the frame takes the brunt of the weigh of a total 300 pounds, I wanted to ensure I have the right layout.

Starting this soon because my current stand from Current USA is starting to wobble.

Thank you for the input.

You could just make the whole thing out of plywood and it would be plenty strong.

I agree, get some really nice 1/2 or 3/4 ply with maybe a birch finish. Connect with pocket holes (basic jig system is only like $25). Then paint, add doors, and you're done. I think this will be plenty strong, skipping the frame will also give you more interior space.
